Fathers Day

Happy Fathers day. I thought I'd share some of my memories I have of you Dad. I don't have too many memories before Oklahoma. But here are a few. Oklahoma: I remember playing in the rain during a lot of rain storms. One was particularly rainy. Then the tornado sirens went off. So I was called in the house. We all sat in the hall way and read our scriptures while we listened to the radio. But that wasn't enough for you. You wanted to see the storm. So you went to the front door. Which I also remember Mom not being to happy about. We went to the pool a lot during the summers. You helped me swim and would always throw me in the air and make me be shamu. Texas: I can remember you helping me learn to ride my bike without training wheels. Like everything you have taught me over the years I tend to get frustrated. You have always been patient with me. I can remember playing around the world with you on our basketball court. Many nights were spent outside. We all learned to work hard in San Antonio. That's where we always had a hue project to work on. I also remember you teach ing me my times tables. There was that chart with 1-12 on the side and top and I had to fill in rest. But the thing I remember the most is just sitting with you on the floor of your room in front of your bed while you were studying. You never made me leave even if I did distract you. Well sometimes you did. California: This would most definitely be where most of my memories are of soccer and airplanes. You were nicknamed Chiquita Banana. You always supported me in what ever I wanted to do. But this time you wanted more. So you kinda became the defense coach. My soccer team was undefeated that year and it was probably because you helped so much. North Dakota: Most of my memories here are of snow and mosquitoes. Here is a funny one you might remember. Jimmy was having a party and the front door was opening a lot so tons of mosquitoes would come in. But we also realized that the netting around the window air conditioning came off and mosquitoes were being shot into our house. We spent hours going around with fly swatters. I also remember you finding your 'leave bag' and looking inside and your Diet Dr Pepper had frozen and exploded inside. I remember going to Devils Lake and being half the branch. I also remember you gave me the best 13th Birthday ever. We went to Hawaii. I have lots of memories of that red webbing we sat on. Virginia: I remember how nice it was that you befriended the Walzers. We only spent a year there but you showed us that every place we went was for a purpose and worth it. One of my favorite memories ever was during that Christmas where the parents all wanted to go to Williamsburg. But the cousins just wanted a day to play. So we made a Declaration and got our pencil horns and instruments and marched around the upstairs to read it to our parents. You guys thought it was funny that we put so much effort into it that you let us stay home. This is also where our 'history talks began." Many hours were spent "going back to Abraham." Florida: Being only a few years ago I can remember more of Florida. This is where I grew up. You taught me how to drive because Mom wouldn't. How brave you were to teach all of us kids how to drive. Again you were patient with me. Even more so when you were trying to teach me Chemistry. That was a lost cause. I didn't inherit those genes that's for sure. I remember you always supporting Jimmy and I during our church ball games. Mostly I just remember how great of a Dad you were. And how much you love me. And how much I love you.

Race Day!

As fun as the triathlon was, I am glad we are finished. There was a lot of anxiety going into it, and it was a tough race. We got up at 3:45 am and met with 3 other couples. After securing our bikes onto the vehicles, we drove to Payson where the triathlon would take place. We pulled in around 6:00 am, unloaded our stuff, and pumped up our tires. By the time we made it to the registration table to get our bib numbers and timing chip, it was getting close to race time. We found out that Chelsea and our neightbor Nicole were both in the first heat starting at 7:00 am. They still needed to change into their swim suits and almost didn't make it in time. Charlie, and 3 others from our group were in the 2nd heat starting as soon as everyone from the first was out of the water. The timing chip went around our ankles and there were sensors that marked the time it took for each event. After leaving the pool, we had to run to where the bikes were parked, dry off, get shoes, socks and helmets on and speed down a small hill toward an 8 mile loop. The bike portion was done while traffic was directed at stop signs allowing us to go through with out stopping. When we signed up for the triathlon, we were told there would be one large up hill and one large down hill. What they failed to mention was that the rest of the bike course would have medium sized hills nearly the entire way. The second time around the loop was much eaiser than the first, because we were a little more prepared for the long series of hills and knew a little better when the turns would be coming. The bike portion finished at the same place it started. The run was mostly on level ground (which was a nice, I don't think I could have made it through any more hills after the bike). It was just over 3 miles, overlapping a little with the bike course and cutting through a few neighborhoods. As I crossed the finish line, I saw Chelsea walking towards me quickly, having just finished herself. I was a great feeling to be done. We look foward to doing another race in the fall.
Chelsea did very well, finishing under 2 hours with a total time of 1:55. Her swim took 11 minutes 23 seconds, the bike 1 hour and 10 minutes, and the run 34 minutes.
Charlie had a goal of finishing under 1 hour and 30 minutes. I am glad that I sprinted at to the finish line. My total time was 1 hour 29 minutes and 55 seconds. Swim- 11 minutes and 2 seconds, bike- 54 minutes, and run- 24 minutes.

Storms, Hikes, Temples and Kelly

It has been really bad weather this week. We have closed the park a few times this week and last. Today's after noon storm was really scary. There was a ton of lightning and thunder. And the wind was blowing so hard that chairs, tubes and garbage cans were blowing everywhere. The weather here is so unpredictable. Its terrible one hour and the next its beautiful. Then it gets bad again later that day. There is no knowing. Oliver and I went on another hike this week. And it was raining of course. But it was nice and cool. It was by far the hardest hike we did. I think it was called slate canyon. It was pretty steep. We hiked for about an hour but we didn't do the whole hike because I had to go to the Oquirrh Mountain Temple open house. It was my second open house. Rexburg was my first. It was fun and I went with two of my friends. We didn't have to work that day because we didn't open. The temple actually looks like a mini Rexburg temple. Its not a very big one but it was beautiful. I'm glad I'm having these experiences when I'm still young. That same night we went to the Kelly Clarkson concert. She was the very first winner of American Idol. She played at UVU. I don't know all her music but I do know some of her stuff. Really I went to do something with my friends. And of course it was raining there as well. She is a really good live performer. Must be all those weeks of practice from American Idol. My summer is going good. I just doesn't feel like summer yet because of the weather. I'll be happy when it gets warmer. Because it didn't feel like summer we bought a Santa Clause fruit. We were daring. It actuallly tastes a lot like honeydew. It was sweet and yummy. You all should try one.

October

So, I came up with this crazy idea to name our son the month/day he is born. That joke lasted about 4 minutes, but the month part actually is kinda sticking. We're thinking of naming him October Hansen (middle name is still up for grabs) and nick naming him Tobe or Tober. We'll probably go with a more 'normal' middle name and I told Jen she had free reign if she did let me name him October. I mentioned it to a few people at work citing that I had known May's, June's, April's, and Julie's. My coworkers mentioned they know a few Augusts and loved the name October. Our home teacher origionally didn't like Tobe, but when he heard it was from October he loved October. I thought that was unusual to like October but not Tobe. We'll see what happens in the end.

Is it camping if you don't actualy go camping?

I had a fun weekend with Oliver and Megan. We went to Capital Reef friday night. We were really excited to go camping but the campground was full. So we had to stay in a hotel. It was sad but probably better since it was cold and rainy. But Saturday we had a good day and went on a nice long drive through the park and a two mile hike that took us a few hours with the boys. Here are some pictures. This is some of the only wildlife we saw besides birds. I guess not very many animals can take it.
Here is Ryan taking a nap on Megan. Here is Evan eating the bug spray. Here is Oliver force feeding the boys water. Here is Ryan eating some rocks.
